Start your weekend in Portland off on the proper foot with our brand new Friday night tour that visits one brewery, one winery, and one distillery. Have some fun with us on a Fermented Friday!

Our first stop is Island Dog Brewing in South Portland. Island Dog Brewing was established in 2016 by Jim Denz and Tim Francis, and are now the third brewery to call South Portland home. They produce primarily Belgian and German-inspired beers (including herb and spice ales), and the company name comes from the owner’s love of rescue dogs and the sheer beauty of Coastal Maine. Jim spent time in the Army, worked as a high school teacher, and spent many years working in technology. Jim met Tim, who has experience with home brewing (in addition to a diverse background including retail, food service, and communications) at a beer festival a few years ago. Enjoy their spacious tasting room as you sip on beers infused with ingredients that you didn’t know would taste so good in beer.

Next, we head to Three of Strong Spirits which opened in Portland’s lively East Bayside neighborhood in July of 2019. Founded by financial and investment manager Sam Pierce and beverage industry attorney David McConnell, their 6,200 square foot tasting room is also their distillation workshop. This allows them to showcase small-batch rums that are distilled with 100% organic cane syrup, pure Sebago Lake water, and yeast. Distiller Graham Hamblett was previously the master distiller at Dogfish Head Distilling Co. in Delaware. Find out the historical origin of their unique company name as you enjoy rum-based cocktails in Maine’s newest distillery.

Finally, we head to Portland to check out Blue Lobster Winery. When you think about how wine is packaged, you typically think of glass bottles. But what if a local company could take exceptional wine and then package it into convenient kegs and cans? Blue Lobster Wine Company was founded in Portland by Chris Gamble, and he works with wine producers from around the world to source a collection of great tasting wines, including reds, whites, and rosés. In their East Bayside tasting room, we will learn about the selection methods, the cellaring process, barrel-aging, as well as blending before packaging.

At the end of the tour we will drop you back off at Old Port Spirits and Cigars to grab some bottles and cans before continuing your exploration of lively downtown Portland.

Please note that tour stops may change without notice due to events and availability of staff at each venue.
