This tour follows the motto of the State of Maine. Dirigo means “I Lead” in Latin, and on this discovery tour we will visit three places that are considered leaders in the industry.
Once we’ve finished the Dirigo Discovery tour, we’ll drop you back off at Old Port Spirits and Cigars, where you can purchase some beer for later and continue your exploration of lively downtown Portland.

Foundation Brewing Company was started in 2014 by avid homebrewers Joel Mahaffey and John Bonney, along with their wives. Joel and John met at a homebrew shop called Central Street Farmhouse in Bangor and soon began homebrewing together. Joel is a former art director and designer, and John transitioned away from the practice of medicine. They both found their true passion in the art of making beer – the true foundation for modern civilization. Today they use classic styles as the inspiration for brewing exciting beers that push conventional boundaries.
The name of Rising Tide Brewing Company, inspired by the famous quote, “…a rising tide lifts all boats,” encapsulates the collaborative spirit of the craft beer industry. This husband- and wife-owned brewery was founded near Allagash in 2010, and moved to the now-bustling East Bayside neighborhood in 2012. They have experienced tremendous growth with the popularity of their core beers like Zephyr and Maine Island Trail Ale. After remodeling and expanding their tasting room, they saw on-site revenue increase by 50 percent. They have expanded yet again, now with a dedicated space for experimental beers brewed with wild yeast and souring bacteria, more space in their existing 5,500 square foot production floor, and an area for private events in a community room.
Root Wild was founded in 2018 by Reid Emmerich, a long-time kombucha brewer and former partner in Urban Farm Fermentory—along with Tom Madden and John Paul, co-founders of Lone Pine Brewing Co. Kombucha is a craft alcohol product that is made with fermented black and green tea. The result is a pleasing low-alcohol base product, to which they add locally foraged fruits, herbs, roots, and more. The 12 taps feature the brewery’s “core flavors” of kombucha on draft: Wild Blueberry, Ginger, and Vanilla Rooibos, along with tasty flavors in seasonal rotation. Alongside the kombucha are special beers brewed by Lone Pine for Root Wild that are also clearly a departure from the norm. Their goal is to blur the lines between their products and experiment with beer-kombucha blends. Root Wild is one of the first kombucha producers in the country to package their kombucha in 12-ounce aluminum cans to allow for greater distribution of their products.
