Fore River Brewing // Gruit // Lone Pine Brewing Co.
Our first stop is Fore River Brewing. Fore River Brewing Company opened in South Portland in early 2016, and they are already the oldest of three breweries in the city. John and TJ – two friends and avid home-brewers – teamed up with Alex the property owner (who had just sold his landscaping business) to open the brewery. They worked for months to hand craft and perfect their beers and the beautiful tasting room, which has both classic and modern barn elements in the design. Look for an outside beer garden at this spot just across the river from Portland.
After our look at the first brewery to open in South Portland, we’ll check out Gruit, the beer side of Urban Farm Fermentory. A production center unlike any other, the Urban Farm Fermentory focuses on fermentation in all of its wild and untamed glory. Hard cider you’ve surely heard of, but maybe not quite like this: Fresh-pressed local apples, wild-fermented, dry as a bone. The kombucha is where UFF truly shines and will surely surprise the uninitiated: a fermented tea, this tonic is low in alcohol but high in tart, fruity flavor, mixed with a startling variety of locally-grown herbs and spices.
Our last stop is Lone Pine Brewing Co. After working in the retail side of beer for over a decade, Tom Madden decided that the time was right to break into producing his own beer. A long-time home brewer and Certified Cicerone, he reconnected with his longtime friend John Paul who had been working in the music industry in California. Together, they opened Lone Pine in March of 2016 in a former countertop production space in Portland’s East Bayside, and they are churning out American-style Pale and Wheat Ales for retail sale and enjoyment in their elevated tasting room.
Once we’ve finished the Dirigo Discovery tour, we’ll drop you back off at Old Port Spirits and Cigars, where you can purchase some beer for later and continue your exploration of lively downtown Portland.
