Leave the mimosa’s behind and hop on the bus to check out three trendsetting breweries located in lively Portland locations.
Bissell Brothers Brewing Co. has a brand new location for their brewery at Thompson’s Point. Peter and Noah Bissell, the eponymous Brothers, made a splash in late 2013 when they released their first full-production offering: The Substance Ale. Mainers and visitors alike have been clamoring for their hop-forward American ales, and this amazing new space will increase production by 40% to provide all of us with more Bissell beer. We will be the only guests in the brewery, as by special arrangement we visit over an hour before they open to the public.
Next up is one of the newest breweries in the state, Fore River Brewing Company. South Portland’s first brewery operation in over a decade, Fore River Brewing Company opened in early 2016. John and TJ – two friends and avid homebrewers – teamed up with Alex the property owner (who had just sold his landscaping business) to open the brewery. They worked for months to hand craft and perfect their beers and the beautiful tasting room, which has both classic and modern barn elements in the design. Look for an outside beer garden in the future from this spot just across the river from Portland.
Last on the tour is Bunker Brewing Co. Based in a tiny, brick-walled former scrapyard building where they don’t take themselves too seriously, Bunker Brewing Company’s brewers make a rotating assortment of ales and lagers, making this the perfect stop during which to ask the question, “What’s the difference between an ale and a lager?” If you prefer to dance the day away amongst the brewing equipment, this is a good stop for you, too.
Even the snack for this tour is brunch related, as you will enjoy a locally baked breakfast-themed hand pie from our friends at Ten Ten Pie.
Once we’ve finished the Beerunch! tour, we’ll drop you back off at Old Port Spirits, where you can purchase some beer for later and is an excellent location to continue your exploration of lively downtown Portland.
